In John 6:25 Jesus has just reached the shore again after feeding the 5,000 people with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish. He is approached by some that had been looking for him since he had left. This is interesting because Jesus can see into our motives better than we can. He answers them by saying "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you..." When I relate this response to my life, for one it makes me nervous that Jesus knows my motives and intentions better than I do, and two it makes me inspect my own life and intentions. Am I seeking after the things of God for my own satisfaction and my own nourishment? Or am I seeking God out of this insane love that I have for Him? Sometimes I have the tendency to look out for myself even in the ministry that I have had the opportunity to be a part of. Because I am human and my nature is to provide for myself and make sure I am getting the better end of the deal. God has not only called us to love Him above everything else, but also to "love your neighbor as yourself." Does this seem difficult to anyone else? We are constantly in a battle to not give in to our human nature and look out for our own needs, but we are commanded to live for God and show the same love he shows us to our neighbors.
I pray that we as Christians can remember why we carry that title and that we would not seek God for our own benefit, rather we would truly love him with everything we have. If we do truly love God then obedience comes naturally.
